Behind the Batter

Did Somebody Say Brownie Turkeys and Banana Pilgrim Hats?

We sure did! How about them bananas? We couldn't resist giving these Pilgrim Hats and Turkeys a try.  We are absolutely delighted with how they came out, the turkeys are stuffed (pun intended) with candy corns, bittersweet chocolate, edible eyes, and red M&M's for a nose.

The Pilgrim Hats are surprisingly simple. We started by cutting each Brownie into four bite size pieces. Then we cut up bananas to make the "hats", topped them with melted chocolate, and drew the belt and buckle on the hat with yellow icing.

Nothing on our blog is meant to be perfect. Experiment, have fun, and don't be afraid to get messy! Everyone at your Thanksgiving table will gobble these crafty little treats right up!

Pilgrim Hats

What you will need:

  • Bananas
  • Vermont Brownies - your favorite flavors (1 Brownie yields 4 Pilgrim Hats)
  • Baker's chocolate squares (we used bittersweet)
  • Yellow writing icing to draw buckle on each hat

Instructions:

  • Cut Brownies into 4 square pieces.
  • Cut bananas for hats. You might have to trim the bananas a bit in order to stand up straight.
  • Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Place Brownies on parchment paper. Leave plenty of room between brownies.
  • Melt chocolate in double boiler or according to directions on the package.
  • Once chocolate is melted, dip bottom of banana into chocolate and place on top of Brownie. (this helps the banana stay upright)
  • Spoon 1-2 tablespoons of melted chocolate over each banana to coat. Let the chocolate pool into a circle at the base.
  • Place in the freezer for 30 minutes or until chocolate hardens.
  • Use yellow writing icing to draw buckle on each hat.

Brownie Turkeys

What you will need:

  • Vermont Brownies - your favorite flavors (1 Brownie yields 4 Turkeys)
  • Candy Corn
  • Baker's chocolate squares (we used bittersweet)
  • Edible Eyes
  • Red M&M's

Instructions:

  • Cut Brownies into 4 square pieces.
  • Melt chocolate in double boiler or according to directions on package.
  • Once chocolate is melted, dip the top of the Brownie into the chocolate and set on plate, serving dish or sheet pan.
  • Place three candy corns on top half of Brownie.
  • Add edible eyes.
  • Cut red M&M's in half. Place under eyes to make a nose.

Happy Thanksgiving!
